In the 1960s, doctors started prescribing it as an anti-epileptic in the United Kingdom. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it for use in the United States in 1968.

Tegretol (Carbamazepine) Warnings
The FDA requires Tegretol to carry a black-box warning because this drug may cause a rare but serious skin rash that may lead to death. These rashes are likely to show up within the first four months of taking the medication, but could also occur at any time. The reaction can happen in anyone but ita€™s most common in people of Asian descent. If you are of Asian descent you should take a genetic blood test before taking Tegretol.
Tegretol also carries a black-box warning about aplastic anemia (a blood disorder when bone marrow doesna€™t make enough new blood cells called platelets) and agranulocytosis (a disorder in which bone marrow doesna€™t make enough white blood cells).
You should not stop taking Tegretol without talking to your doctor first. Stopping this drug suddenly can cause serious problems.
